How to Attach a 3D Charm to a Necklace with Jump Rings

A small jump ring can connect a decorative 3D charm to a necklace chain. The important skill is opening the ring sideways and closing it flush.

What you will make

A necklace with one securely attached 3D decorative charm, ready for styling after checking the chain closure.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose one charm with an attachment loop and a chain whose link opening can accept the selected jump ring.
  2. Check that the ring's wire thickness and inner opening fit both the charm and chain. A closed ring that is too small will not work.
  3. Grip one side of the ring with pliers and the other with a second suitable pair. Twist one side slightly towards you and the other away; do not stretch it into an oval.
  4. Pass the opened ring through the charm loop and a chosen chain link.
  5. Twist the ring ends back together until the cut ends meet neatly with no visible gap.
  6. Hold the necklace up and gently tug the charm to test the join. If your chain is not pre-fitted with a closure, add a suitable necklace clasp separately.

Before selling your finished piece

Make sure the jump ring is completely closed, the charm cannot slip out, and all edges are smooth. Do not claim a finished necklace is photographed here; only the actual raw materials are shown.

Quick questions

Why not pull the ring open straight out? Pulling the ends apart changes the ring shape and makes it harder to close securely. Open it with a sideways twist.
