How to Use Eye Pins for Jewellery Making: Easy Bead Connector Tutorial

Want to join beads neatly in a bracelet, necklace or earring? Eye pins are a simple way to make bead connectors. Each eye pin has a small loop at one end; you add a bead and make a second loop to connect the piece to jewellery findings.

Quick guide: eye pin → bead → second loop → connect. This beginner tutorial uses actual Century Fancy Beads product photographs, not simulated finished jewellery.

1. What you need

Start with Eye Pins (I Pins) for Jewellery Making, a bead with a compatible hole, and suitable pliers. A jewellery wire cutter helps trim excess pin wire. For repeatable loops, see our Eye Pin Maker Pliers in 1.5mm and 2.25mm options.

2. Make one bead connector in five steps

  1. Check the bead hole. Test one bead on one eye pin before preparing a full batch. Do not force a pin through a tight hole.
  2. Slide the bead on. The existing loop becomes the first attachment point. Add a suitable spacer only if your design needs one.
  3. Leave room for a loop. Measure enough wire above the bead for the loop size you want. Trim the excess with a wire cutter, keeping cut ends away from your face.
  4. Bend and form the second loop. Use round-nose or appropriate eye-pin-making pliers. Make the loop face the intended direction and avoid sharp bends at the bead.
  5. Join the pieces. Open the loop sideways, connect it to a chain link or another component, then close it securely. Gently tug-test the connection.

3. What can you make?

  • Bracelets: repeat bead connectors between chain sections.
  • Earrings: connect one or two lightweight bead drops to suitable earring findings.
  • Necklaces: alternate bead links and chain for a simple pattern.

4. Common mistakes to avoid

Do not leave a gap in the loop: it can allow the next component to slip out. Avoid trimming the pin too short, and do not assume every bead hole fits every pin thickness. Make one test piece first.

Quick questions

Do I need a special machine? No. Small batches can be made with suitable jewellery pliers; dedicated eye-pin-making pliers can help with repeated loops.

Is the bead connector strong enough? Strength depends on wire gauge, loop closure, bead weight and use. Test the finished piece before selling or wearing it.
